SUMMARY:Open Space Speaker Series: “Local Government Planning for Wildlife and Mobility Across Transportation Corridors” with Andy Hough\, Environmental Resource Coordinator\, Douglas County Open Space & Natural Resources
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nHave you ever wondered how Colorado wildlife can navigate across major transportation corridors along the Front Range? Major highways like Interstate-25 have approximately 200\,000 cars passing through per day\, while they intersect with some significant wildlife corridors and migration routes for key species like bears\, elk\, pronghorn\, and mule deer. Douglas County Open Space has developed some innovative  tools to conserve wildlife habitat and provide mobility across major transportation corridors. These tools can be used to help build a robust wildlife system and then protect\, leverage\, and expand it in land use and transportation planning decisions. These concepts are presented in the context of Douglas County’s efforts in building such a system over the last 25 years and how this system paid big dividends in securing large wildlife passage structures in the I-25 and US Highway 85 expansion projects. \nAndy has had a diverse professional background including working as an Army Artillery Liaison Officer; District Wildlife Manager with the Colorado Division of Wildlife; Resources Specialist\, Land Use Administrator\, Environmental Sustainability Coordinator and Zoning Compliance Supervisor for Douglas County Planning.  He is currently employed as the Environmental Resources Coordinator for Douglas County Open Space & Natural Resources.  Andy has professional experience in wildlife management\, habitat and ecosystem restoration\, environmental regulatory compliance\, land use\, law enforcement\, leadership\, agricultural research and plant propagation.  He has a BS in biology from the University of South Florida in Tampa and has completed graduate coursework toward a MA in political science-public policy at the University of Colorado-Denver. \nHeld Virtually via Zoom \nPlease click the link below to join the webinar:\nhttps://broomfield.zoom.us/j/82125155838?pwd=UFB4SGpDK1lTSWJMOWYyWnA4SmUvQT09\nPasscode: 163588 \n\nDial by phone: 877 853 5247\nWebinar ID: 821 2515 5838\nPasscode: 163588

SUMMARY:“Trees along the Trails: Open Space Series: A Talk with a City Forester” with Nils Saha\, Broomfield City and County Forester and Jack Pritchard\, Broomfield Open Space and Trails Specialist
DESCRIPTION:From Bur Oaks to Narrowleaf Cottonwood\, today’s urban forest canopy denotes the human presence on the prairie landscape here in Broomfield. Join the Open Space and Trails Department for a conversation with the new City and County Forester\, as we mark the annual celebration of Arbor Day – And Broomfield’s 33rd year as a “Tree City\,” along with a summary of the History of Arbor Day itself. Trees provide us much more than you might guess! \nNils Saha is the City and County Forester in Broomfield. She joined the department in November 2021. Nils began her urban forestry career in New York City and moved to Colorado in 2015 to work for the City Forester’s Office in Denver. SUMMARY:“Wildfires in Colorado” with Dana Coelho
DESCRIPTION:Wildfires are a natural part of Colorado’s forests. If you live in the wildland-urban interface in Colorado\, where homes and other structures intermingle with wildland vegetation\, you are at risk of being affected by wildfire. The Colorado State Forest Service recently updated the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) Guide\, an important resource for protecting homes and properties from wildfire\, and is in the process of updating the Front Range Recommended Trees List and Vegetation List in collaboration with numerous partners. \nDana Coelho is the Urban & Community Forestry Program Manager for Colorado State Forest Service. Based out of the Broomfield Field Office\, she works with colleagues and partners to sustain healthy and resilient forests that are integrated with and contribute to the wellbeing of all Colorado communities. She is an active board member of the Colorado Tree Coalition\, ISA Rocky Mountain Chapter\, and Metro Denver Nature Alliance. A huge tree nerd\, Dana enjoys time outside with family and friends\, exploring new places near and far\, and live music and theater \n  \n  \nPlease click the link below to join the webinar: \nhttps://broomfield.zoom.us/j/82125155838?pwd=UFB4SGpDK1lTSWJMOWYyWnA4SmUvQT09 \nPasscode: 163588 \nDial by phone: 877 853 5247 \nWebinar ID: 821 2515 5838 \nParticipant ID: # \nPasscode: 163588
