SUMMARY:Off with Their Heads! Weed Removal at Broomfield Commons Open Space
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by the City and County of Broomfield\, Broomfield Open Space Foundation\, and Butterfly Pavilion \nOpen spaces are full of life unique to Colorado and in order for that life to thrive\, we need to remove troublemakers. Noxious weeds are plants that don’t play nice with other plants by pushing the desirable native plants out of the landscape. This reduces diversity in the spaces noxious weeds occupy. Noxious weeds produce hundreds of seeds that could last up to 100 years in the soil! Broomfield Commons Open Space has noxious weeds that must be escorted out to let the natives move in. \nOn August 19th from 8-12 pm\, we invite you to join us in the battle against Musk Thistle and Common Mullein along the northernmost border of Broomfield Commons Open Space. We will meet in the North lot of Paul Derda Recreation Center (13201 Lowell Blvd). Broomfield City and County staff will be there\, along with Broomfield Open Space Foundation Board Members\, some Butterfly Pavilion RMVs\, and other open space champions from the community. \nAll are welcome to come and help for as long as they like. Wear long sleeves\, long pants\, closed-toe shoes\, sunhats\, and sunscreen. Bring gloves\, water\, and feel free to bring loppers\, hand clippers\, and shovels. We will provide some tools and trash bags as well. \nYour sweat equity will pay off for nature leaving a positive mark on Broomfield Commons Open Space! \nPlease register at Volunteer Hub for the Noxious Weed Pulling at County Commons. This event is FREE. \nLink to Registration: https://broomfield.volunteerhub.com/vv2/event/4233c894-e42b-4604-b50f-2173cebe5477 \nContact Jessica Goldstrohm at 970-690-4408 if you arrive later than 8 am so she can direct you to where the group is working. \nInfo about the primary targets: \nMusk thistle \nhttps://www.invasivespeciesinfo.gov/terrestrial/plants/musk-thistle \nCommon Mullein \nhttps://www.jeffco.us/2512/Common-Mullein \n  \n

SUMMARY:Open Space Speaker Series: “Wild for Bees” with Jessica Goldstrohm
DESCRIPTION:Bees! Bees! Bees! \nJoin Jessica Goldstrohm\, owner of The Bees Waggle\, LLC\, as she shares the many amazing skills of bees and all the things that make bees so important to the environment. Learn about the vast array of bee species on the planet\, and how you can “bee” a good steward to bees in your own backyard. Jessica Goldstrohm is an accomplished entrepreneur\, author\, speaker\, photographer\, and naturalist with a passion for wild bees and other wonders of nature. \nJessica Goldstrohm holds a BS in News Editing from the University of Colorado and an MS in Biomedical Sciences from Colorado State University. She is currently working on a MA in Biology through the Denver Zoo and Miami University. Jessica has worked in labs doing research on cells but found that teaching people about nature\, as well as observing nature is far more interesting\, inspiring\, and meaningful to her. \nJessica owns The Bees Waggle\, LLC\, a small business aimed at raising awareness about wild bees as well as other wonders of nature. Jessica gives talks\, guest teaches in schools\, designs products for solitary bees\, and writes articles and social media posts (Instagram\, Facebook\, YouTube). Additionally\, she has developed curricula for elementary schools to teach about pollinators\, soil\, and biodiversity for organizations including Beyond Pesticides and Douglas County Conservation District. She has served on the boards of People and Pollinators Action Network (PPAN)\, Colorado Pollinator Network (CPN)\, and Douglas County Conservation District (DCCD)\, and is currently on the board of Broomfield Open Space Foundation (BOSF). Jessica has self-published two children’s books (The Hungry Honeybee and The Pollinator Hero Journal) centered around helping bees in the actions we take. \nJessica spends most of her time outside with her family or alone looking for buzzing subjects and their kin to observe and photograph. Jessica has gained her naturalist expertise through rigorous studying\, time spent with experts\, and hours spent observing nature. Her current goals include expanding her writing\, teaching\, and curriculum development to include actions we can take in our yards to improve local biodiversity and to connect people to nature through these activities. \nClick here for login information

SUMMARY:Open Space Speaker Series: “Nature in a Digital World: Why Getting Outside in Nature Matters” with Louise Chawla
DESCRIPTION:Declining mental health in children and adolescents coincides with two massive shifts in the culture of contemporary childhood: the rise of time on digital screens and the fall of free-ranging exploration and free play outside. This talk begins by sharing research that establishes these connections\, and then shares examples of what can be done\, as parents\, grandparents\, park and open space systems\, and communities\, to bring nature back into children’s lives in ways that support mental health and wellbeing. Examples include “green hours” outdoors\, “nature bathing” with teens\, nature breaks on schoolyards\, and children’s participation in ecological restoration. Added benefits: time in nature is good for all ages! \nLouise Chawla is Professor Emeritus in the Environmental Design Program at the University of Colorado Boulder\, and an active member of the university’s Community Engagement\, Design and Research Center. She serves on the Scientific Advisory Council of the Children and Nature Network\, and the Steering Committee of Growing Up Boulder\, a program that involves children and teens in city planning and design. Her research and publications focus on children and nature\, children in cities\, and the development of committed action for the environment. \nClick here for login information
